FAQ

Stryd provides following metrics:
  1. Power
  2. Form Power
  3. Elevation
  4. Cadence
  5. Ground contact time
  6. Vertical oscillation
  7. Leg Stiffness
  8. Pace
  9. Distance
Stryd is splash-proof but Stryd is not designed to be ran in streams and rivers. We recommend stepping around the stream if you are using Stryd.
Stryd will do a great job helping you keep your effort even on uneven terrain. However, downhill running can put high concentrated stress on your knees and ankles. Push your power, but do so at a safe level.

Yes. Using Stryd indoors is a great way to capture running power as well as pace and distance. Stryd does not rely on GPS, and can be used in any environment to measure distance, pace, power and all other metrics.

An additional benefit: Stryd will report true treadmill pace and distance.

We have found that most treadmills have a difficult time of keeping a consistent, accurate pace when a runner is on the machine. Therefore, it is difficult to know what you are really getting out of the workout! Stryd's motion capture technology tells you what is really happening so you can make treadmill running as useful as outdoor running.

Learn more about how to use Stryd on your treadmill

There are three ways to use your Stryd device.
  1. Watch
  2. Phone
  3. Only Stryd
Watch

The watch is a great, compact way to view and record your running data. Grab your Garmin, Suunto, or Polar watch and pair it with Stryd. Use power to guide your effort in real time. Scroll up and click on 'Run with Stryd' to learn how.

Phone

The phone is a flexible way to run with Stryd. You can listen to music and take photos on your run. Grab your iPhone or Android phone and open up the Stryd app to get started. Scroll up and click on 'Run with Stryd' to learn how.

Only Stryd

You can leave the other tech at home! Snap Stryd into your shoe and run. Open up the Stryd Mobile app when you get home to sync out your data for analysis. Scroll up and click on 'Run with Stryd' to learn how.

Stryd lasts for 20+ hours of running. For most people, Stryd only needs a charge once every month or so. Stryd’s LED light will start blinking (twice rapidly every few seconds) when the battery’s charge is running low. You should charge the battery after your run finishes.

Stryd lights up when it is charging. The light shuts off when charging is complete. If the light doesn't come on, you are ready to run!
Place Stryd on the charger. If the light comes on, Stryd is charging. Charging will complete in an hour. If the light stays off, Stryd is fully charged and you are ready to run.
Stryd uses Bluetooth to talk to your phone, and also certain watches (e.g., Suunto or Polar). Bluetooth restricts Stryd can only communicate with device, phone or watch, at a time. If already connected, Stryd cannot be found by other Bluetooth devices. There are two scenarios most commonly causing Stryd not to be seen by the Stryd app:
  1. Your Stryd has been paired in the system Bluetooth settings. Whenever this happens, the iOS system connects to Stryd automatically when it is in range, preventing the mobile app from seeing it. To solve, please unpair Stryd from the iOS System Settings and try to find Stryd from the mobile app again.
  2. Your Stryd has been connected to another device, such as your Bluetooth watch, tablet, or second phone. To solve, disconnect Stryd from the other Bluetooth device. To ensure disconnection, power down all nearby Bluetooth devices.
  3. Something else could be wrong. Restart your phone by powering it off and powering it back on. This is the best way to start anew.
If you are using an iOS device, after a firmware upgrade, you need to
  1. Completely force the Stryd app to quit. To do that, double-click on the home button to access the multitasking tray and then swipe up on the app that you want to close.
  2. Turn off and then turn on Bluetooth. To do that, bring up the Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of your iPhone screen, then find the bluetooth icon and click on it twice.
Once you are done with the 2 steps above, you are ready to use your newly upgraded Stryd with the Stryd app!
Stryd is designed to only measure power when running. We will soon add the capability to measure power, pace and distance while walking. Every sport has its own unique dynamics — we’re just focusing on running and walking for right now.
The original Stryd Pioneer is mounted on the chest and measures and records heart rate, cadence, ground contact time, vertical oscillation and, of course, power. It does this by tracking the runner’s center of mass through three dimensional space, and then calculates the force that is required to move that mass over time. From this, Stryd reports running power.

The new Stryd is worn on the shoe and measures distance, pace, cadence, ground contact time, power and two new efficiency metrics. The first is Form Power (FP). Form Power is a measurement of the amount of power that Is produced to maintain the runner’s individual form, but is not put towards the metabolic cost of running forward. The second is Leg Spring Stiffness (LSS). Leg Spring Stiffness is a measure of running efficiency and how well the runner recycles the energy that they apply to running. LSS has been shown to be correlated with running performance.

Both Stryd devices have been validated with 3D motion capture cameras, force-plate treadmills and VO2-Max testing.

Garmin Says Watch Needs Update

  1. Plug your watch into your computer
  2. Open up Garmin Express
  3. Sync your watch with Garmin Express
  4. Allow Garmin Express to install any necessary updates
  5. Unplug your watch from the computer
  6. Allow your watch to install any updates
  7. Plug the watch back into the computer and do a full sync
  8. Follow the instructions to install the Stryd app
  9. If you followed these steps and you still see an issue, please send us an email at support@stryd.com and we will make it work.

Where Should I View My Garmin Data?

You can view your data on PowerCenter. PowerCenter lets you analyze your data second-by-second and see your overall trends.

We offer automatic syncing. Visit PowerCenter and click 'Settings' in the top menu. Look at the side navigation and select 'CONNECT'. Click on 'Connect' under Garmin to connect your account. All of your workouts will automatically end up on the PowerCenter after you run!

The Stryd PowerCenter will only accept workouts with power data. Be sure to make sure your watch is setup so that it is properly collecting power data. You can learn how to setup your Garmin watch here.

How Do I Know If My Stryd Is Recording?

  1. If you only run with Stryd, Stryd starts recording as soon as you run. You can stop the run by taking Stryd off your shoe and setting it on the table. Stryd will shut off automatically. Sync out your data with the Stryd Mobile app after your run.
  2. If you use a watch or phone, look for the power number on your device! You know you are recording if you start an activity and can see your power.
  3. If you have any problems, scroll up to the 'Run with Stryd' section and look for instructions for your device.

How Does Stryd Measure Power?

Stryd tracks your foot through three dimensional space and records the accelerations, impacts, and forces that are being applied. From that information, we calculate power, as well as provide other commonly used run metrics like distance, pace, cadence, ground contact time, vertical oscillation, etc. All of our calculations have been validated with high resolution motion capture systems, dual force plate treadmill, and metabolic testing.

The pace on my Garmin goes as fast as 2 mins per mile and then back to normal.

Use the Stryd Mobile app and update your firmware to the latest version. This fixes a compatibility issue with the cadence value and the watch that will cause the pace to spike.

I have a new battery but my Stryd Pioneer will not turn on.

We will fix this! Please follow these steps:

  • 1. Grab your Pioneer and a coin (a larger coin like a quarter works best).
  • 2. Unscrew the battery cap on the back side of the Pioneer.
  • 3. Remove the battery from the cap.
  • 4. Look inside the Pioneer. You will see four 'gold leaves' on the back side. Use your coin to gently pry these leaves up, so they are not touching the back side of the device.
  • 5. Grab the battery and place it in the device upside down. So, the side with the lettering will face down into the device. Gently move the battery around.
  • 6. Let the battery fall out of the device.
  • 7. Place the battery in the cap the correct way. Screw the cap back in.
  • 8. Touch the pins on the back side of the Stryd Pioneer. The lights will start blinking as usual. You are ready to run.
